The Start of Kazka
Kazka officially began on March 1, 2017. Their very first song was called "Sviata," which means "Holy." This song became a big hit in Ukraine almost instantly.
At first, Kazka was just Oleksandra Zaritska singing and Mykyta Budash playing guitar and keyboard. Mykyta also helped with the music's sound and how it was put together. The music video for "Sviata" was simple but cool. It used old Slavic symbols like Dazhbog and Koliada.
Trying Out for X-Factor
In 2017, the band decided to try out for the TV show X-Factor Ukraine. They performed their hit song "Sviata." A famous artist named Andrii Danylko was their mentor on the show. Kazka left the show after the fifth episode.
Right after X-Factor, Kazka released their second song called "Dyva," meaning "Miracles." This song quickly went to the top of the iTunes music chart on the day it came out. By the end of 2017, an online magazine called Karabas Live named Kazka the "Best Debut of the Year."
In early 2018, Dmytro Mazuriak joined the band. He is amazing because he can play more than 30 different wind instruments!
Eurovision Song Contest Tryouts
On January 6, 2018, Kazka announced they would try to represent Ukraine in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018. They performed "Dyva" in the first semi-final on February 10. Even though they did well, they finished sixth and didn't make it to the finals.
Karma Album Release
On April 27, 2018, Kazka released their first album online. It was called Karma. The album had ten songs. Three of these songs, "Sviata," "Dyva," and "Sama" (meaning "Alone"), were already released. They also included a cover of a song by Skryabin and Iryna Bilyk called "Movchaty" ("To Keep Quiet"). The album also featured six brand new songs.
Kazka performed the Karma album live for the first time at their own show in Kyiv on June 1. The song "Sviata" was named "Best Pop Band Song" by a national radio station, Kraina FM. The band was also recognized as the "Best Debut."
For the first time ever, a Ukrainian-speaking band made it into the Global Shazam Top 10 chart. Shazam is an app that helps you find out what song is playing. Kazka also set a record for Ukrainian artists with the most views on YouTube. They made it into the Top 100 best music videos on YouTube.
The band was often called the "Breakthrough of the Year." Their song "Plakala" (meaning "She Cried") won the "Hit of the Year" award. It was also one of Ukraine's most popular songs on Apple Music. Kazka's music topped the charts in many countries, including Ukraine, Latvia, Bulgaria, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Belarus, Russia, and Colombia.
In the summer of 2018, Kazka played at several Ukrainian music festivals. These included BeLive in Kyiv, Impulse in Kharkiv, and MRPL City in Mariupol. In the autumn, they started their "Karma Tour" across Ukraine to support their new album. For this tour, a drummer named Ievhen Kostyts and three backup singers joined them. In the winter of 2018, Kazka announced plans for a big tour in the United States and Europe in 2019.
"Plakala" Becomes a Huge Hit
The song "Plakala" was a massive success for the band. It broke several records in countries that used to be part of the CIS. Kazka became the first band from the CIS to reach 8th place in all music categories on the Global Shazam chart. They were also 3rd in the world pop category.
"Plakala" also set a record for Ukrainian artists with the most views on YouTube. It became one of the Top 100 best music videos on the platform. The "Plakala" music video was the first Ukrainian language video to get over 200 million views on YouTube. By 2018, it had over 204 million views, making it the most watched video in Ukraine that year. Kazka received the "Hit of the Year" award from M1 Music Awards for "Plakala." It was also listed as one of the most popular songs in Ukraine by Apple Music.
A music critic named Boris Barabanov said "Plakala" was one of the best songs of 2018. He noted that it was the most popular song on Russian radio stations. He also pointed out that it was the first Ukrainian language song in many years to reach the top of the Russian charts.
