Kelvedon is a village in Essex, England. It is located between the towns of Chelmsford and Colchester. In 2011, about 3,587 people lived there. Today, Kelvedon is home to different businesses. You can also find a special natural area called Brockwell Meadows Local Nature Reserve near the village. It is located close to the River Blackwater.

History of Kelvedon

Kelvedon has been a village for a very long time. People have lived here since the Early Middle Ages. It is even built near an old Roman settlement called Canonium. The oldest part of its church, St Mary the Virgin Church, was built around the early 1100s.

Early Schools and Bridges

Kelvedon's first school, Ayletts Foundation School, started in 1632. Thomas Aylett gave money to pay a teacher. The village is next to the River Blackwater. A packhorse bridge was built over the river around 1750. This bridge was important for travelers going from Norfolk and Suffolk to London. Because of this, Kelvedon became a key stop for people on their way to London. Many inns and places to stay were built there.

Victorian Growth and Seed Farming

Kelvedon grew a lot during the Victorian era. This was because the Norwich to London railway made it easy to travel. People could live in Kelvedon and take the train to work. Victorian Kelvedon was mainly one long street, High Street.

In the late 1800s, Kelvedon became famous for growing seeds. A company called Kings Seeds became well-known for flower and vegetable seeds. Another big seed company, E W Deal & Sons, was also nearby. They were famous for creating the Kelvedon Wonder Pea and other types of plants.

Modern Changes and Roads

In the 1930s, cars became popular. High Street became the A12, which was the main road through Essex. Houses began to spread out along the road for miles.

Ayletts Foundation School closed in 1944. Its building is now the Kelvedon Library and Museum. A new school, Kelvedon St Mary's School, opened in 1977. This school became an academy in 2013. The village used to have a lot of traffic. A bypass was built in the 1960s to send the A12 road around the village. In the 1980s, a large housing area called Riverside Park was built. This added many new homes to Kelvedon.
