The 1992 Tornado Event

On July 14, 1992, a strong F2 tornado hit Kendallville. An F2 tornado is quite powerful. It formed on the west side of the city. The tornado then moved eastward at 30 miles per hour. It passed through the downtown area and a shopping center. It also affected a residential neighborhood.

The tornado grew stronger as it moved. It pulled up trees and knocked down power lines. Luckily, it just missed the Noble County fairgrounds. The county fair was happening there that week. Witnesses said the tornado touched down and lifted up several times.

The tornado left the city from its east side. It then disappeared in Dekalb County. It traveled for 8 miles in total. Its widest point was about 150 yards across. The winds inside the tornado were estimated to be 157 miles per hour. Hail about one inch wide was also reported nearby.

The city's emergency sirens did not go off. The tornado formed very quickly and close to town. City officials did not have time to activate them. Also, weather radar did not detect the tornado. This was because it was relatively narrow for its strength.

No one died during the storm. However, 28 people were injured. 31 homes were completely destroyed. The total damage was estimated to be more than $13 million.
