Kenneth Sutherland (who passed away between 1733 and 1734) was the 3rd Lord Duffus. He was a member of the Scottish nobility, which means he came from an important family with special titles and lands. His family was a smaller part, or "cadet branch," of the larger Clan Sutherland.

Early Life of Kenneth Sutherland

Kenneth Sutherland was the oldest son of James Sutherland, 2nd Lord Duffus and Margaret. His mother was the eldest daughter of Kenneth Mackenzie, 3rd Earl of Seaforth.

Becoming Lord Duffus

Kenneth became the Lord Duffus in 1705 after his father died. At that time, he was serving in the Royal Navy as a captain in the West Indies. This was during a big conflict known as Queen Anne's War.

A Brave Naval Battle

On June 29, 1711, Captain Sutherland showed great courage. With just his own ship, a frigate (a type of warship) that had 46 guns, he fought against eight French privateers. Privateers were like armed ships that were privately owned but allowed by their government to attack enemy ships. After a very tough fight, he was captured. He had received five bullet wounds during the battle.

Supporting the Jacobites

Even though Kenneth Sutherland had voted for the Acts of Union 1707 (which joined Scotland and England into Great Britain), he later supported the Jacobite rising of 1715. The Jacobites were people who wanted to bring back the old royal family, the Stuarts, to the throne.

During this uprising, Kenneth led about 500 men from different Scottish clans, including Clan Mackenzie, Clan Chisholm, and Clan MacDonald. They marched to Tain and announced that James VIII (the Jacobite claimant to the throne) was their rightful king. He also tried to get the leaders of Culloden and Kilravock Castle to give up their homes and weapons, but he was not successful.

Escape and Return

Because he supported the Jacobites, Kenneth Sutherland's lands and titles were taken away. He had to flee Scotland, traveling through Caithness and then to Sweden. While in Sweden, he found out that he was being searched for and decided to surrender. He told the British official in Stockholm about his plan, and this official informed the English Secretary of State.

However, on his way to England, he was arrested by order of the British official in Hamburg. He was held prisoner until the time he was supposed to surrender had passed. After that, he was taken as a prisoner to the Tower of London. Luckily, he was set free in 1717 without having to go to trial.

Later Life and Service

After his release, Kenneth Sutherland joined the Russian Navy. He passed away sometime before March 18, 1733 or 1734.

Family Life

Kenneth Sutherland married Charlotta Christina Sioblade on March 30, 1708. She was the daughter of Eric Sioblade, who was the governor of Gothenburg in Sweden.

Their children were:

  • Eric Sutherland, 4th Lord Duffus, who became the next Lord Duffus.
  • Charlotte Sutherland.
  • Anna Sutherland, who married Baron and Count Marshal Gustaff Adolph Palbitzki of Sweden.
