King's Meaburn is a small village in Cumbria, England. It is also a civil parish, which is a local area with its own council. The village is about 5 miles (8 km) from Appleby-in-Westmorland and 10 miles (16 km) from Penrith.
King's Meaburn sits in the valley of the River Lyvennet. This river flows just west of the village. In the past, people crossed the river using a ford (a shallow place to cross) on the road to nearby villages like Newby and Morland. In 2011, the village had a population of 135 people.
The village is also known for its yearly Beer Festival held at The White Horse inn.
Village History
King's Meaburn is thought to have been an Anglo-Saxon settlement. This means people lived here during the 7th and 8th centuries. The name "Meaburn" comes from "Meadburn," which means "a meadow by a stream." This shows how old the village's name is.
The name King's Meaburn dates back to the 12th century. At that time, King Henry II ruled England. He gave some of the village's land to a knight named Sir Hugh de Morville. The King gave the other part of the land to Sir Hugh's sister, Maud de Veteripont.
Later, Sir Hugh de Morville upset the King. Because of this, King Henry II took back Sir Hugh's land. This part of the village then became known as King's Meaburn. The land that belonged to Maud is still called Maulds Meaburn today.
An interesting event happened in the village in 1745. Charles Edward Stuart, also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, was a famous historical figure. He and some of his soldiers crossed the ford in the village. They were on their way to meet more of his troops in a place called Shap.
Geography and Weather
King's Meaburn is located near mountains. Because of this, the village can experience very strong winds. These winds are known as the Helm Wind.
Local Churches

Steele's Mill
Steele's Mill used to be a watermill. Today, it has been changed into a holiday cottage. You can still see some of its original parts. It has a waterwheel and three grinding stones set into the floor. The mill also has its original apple-wood cogs and gears, which are now protected behind glass.
Public Services
The village has a local inn called the White Horse Inn. This inn is special because it also works as the village's post office. King's Meaburn used to have its own school, but it closed down in 1983.
