Kirby's Dream Land 3 is a fun platform game released in 1997 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, a classic video game console from the 1990s. Developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo, this game stars the adorable pink hero, Kirby. It's the fifth game in the popular Kirby series and the third one to carry the Kirby's Dream Land name. Many characters from Dream Land 2 also appear in this adventure.

Kirby's Dream Land 3 was the last game Nintendo released for the SNES in North America. For a long time, it wasn't available in Europe and Australia due to technical issues. However, fans in those regions could finally play it when it was released on the Virtual Console for the Wii in 2009 and for the Wii U in 2013. The game also became available on the Virtual Console in North America and Japan in 2009 and 2013, respectively. In 2012, it was included in the Kirby's Dream Collection for the Wii and is also part of the Nintendo Classics service.

Discovering Kirby's Dream Land 3

The Story Unfolds: Saving Popstar

One peaceful day on Planet Popstar, Kirby was enjoying a relaxing fishing trip with his friend Gooey. Suddenly, a mysterious dark cloud appeared in the sky. This shadowy presence began to break apart Popstar's rings and spread its darkness across the entire world. Coo, another one of Kirby's friends, quickly alerted Kirby to the danger. Without hesitation, Kirby and his friends set off on a new adventure to protect their home once again.

The game has two different endings, depending on whether you collect all the special Heart Stars throughout your journey.

  • If you don't collect all the Heart Stars, Kirby and his friends will face King Dedede, who is being controlled by a dark force called Dark Matter. After defeating Dedede once, Dark Matter reveals itself, and Kirby must fight Dedede again. Once Dark Matter is defeated, Kirby and Gooey head home, but they feel a lingering sense of unease. The game ends by showing a huge, shadowed orb with a single red eye. This mysterious figure is Zero, the powerful leader of the Dark Matter Army.
  • If you collect all the Heart Stars, the adventure continues! You still fight Dedede, but then Dark Matter flies into space. Kirby chases after it, armed with a special weapon called the Love-Love Stick, which is powered by all the Heart Stars you collected. After a big battle with Dark Matter, Zero himself appears, leading to a very challenging final fight. When Zero is defeated, peace finally returns to the universe.

How to Play: Kirby's Amazing Abilities

Kirby's Dream Land 3 is a classic Kirby platformer. You control Kirby, guiding him through various levels to reach the end. Kirby can walk, swim, and fly, using his unique abilities and teaming up with his Animal Friends to overcome obstacles and defeat enemies.

Kirby's main moves include inhaling enemies, spitting them out as stars, using his Air Gun, and floating through the air. When Kirby inhales certain enemies, he can copy their special abilities. These Copy Abilities can be used as powerful weapons or to solve puzzles. For example, some blocks can only be destroyed by a specific ability shown on them.

Facing the Ultimate Dark Matter Threat

Zero is the game's secret and true final boss. To face this ultimate challenge and achieve the best ending, you must collect all the Heart Stars in every level. Zero appears as a giant eye and is the powerful leader behind the Dark Matter invasion of Dream Land. Defeating Zero is a major challenge, and it's key to bringing true peace to the universe. Even after this battle, Zero, in a new form called '0^2' (pronounced Zero Two), returns in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, still appearing as a giant eye and presenting a tough fight.

Kirby's Loyal Companions

Kirby doesn't have to face these challenges alone! He has several friends who can help him on his journey.

Meet Gooey, Kirby's Blob Friend

At any point during the game, Kirby can summon Gooey, a blue, long-tongued blob who first appeared in Dream Land 2. Calling Gooey costs Kirby two hit points. When controlled by the computer or a second player, Gooey has abilities similar to Kirby's. He can swallow enemies with his long tongue, then either spit them out or copy their abilities for a short time. Gooey's tongue can also grab items, just like Kirby's inhale. Kirby can even inhale Gooey to get his two hit points back!

Kirby's Animal Friends: Team Up for Adventure

Besides Gooey, Kirby can team up with six other Animal Friends, three of whom were introduced in the previous game. These friends allow Kirby to ride, be carried, or roll, creating new team-based abilities and different ways to use Kirby's Copy Abilities. The friends Kirby can team up with are:

  • Rick the Hamster: He can stomp on enemies, run very fast, doesn't slip on ice, and can climb walls.
  • Coo the Owl: He can fly quickly, even against strong winds, and lets Kirby inhale while in the air.
  • Kine the Ocean sunfish: He can stomp on enemies, swim much better in water (even against strong currents), and lets Kirby inhale underwater.
  • Nago the Calico cat: She can stomp on enemies and perform a triple-jump.
  • Pitch the Bird: He offers many different versions of Kirby's copy abilities. However, he can't fly against strong winds like Coo and has more limited flight compared to Kirby's floating.
  • ChuChu the Octopus: She can float for a limited time and can cling to and walk across ceilings. She can also grab items with her tentacles, similar to Gooey's tongue.

Many puzzles in the game require you to use the unique skills of these Animal Friends. For example, one mission might need Kirby to escort Rick over high walls and gaps, while another might require using the Clean ability with Pitch to water flowers. The Animal Friends are a fun way to add variety to the gameplay and help Kirby on his quest. Each world also has a special Heart Star mission where Kirby must escort an Animal Friend to meet one of their acquaintances at the end of the level.
