Website Town of Kremmling

Kremmling is a small town in Grand County, Colorado, United States. It is known as a "Statutory Town." In 2020, about 1,509 people lived there. Kremmling is located along the upper Colorado River. It sits in a dry part of Middle Park, between Byers Canyon and Gore Canyon. The town was started in 1881. This was during the time of the Colorado Silver Boom, when people were looking for silver. However, not much silver was found nearby, so the town grew slowly at first.

History of Kremmling

The town of Kremmling began with a general store. This store was run by a man named Rudolph "Kare" Kremmling. It was built on the north side of Muddy Creek. In 1881, two brothers, Aaron and John Kinsey, turned part of their ranch into a town. They called it Kinsey City.

Kare Kremmling moved his store to this new spot. Soon, people started calling the whole area Kremmling. The first post office was named Kinsey City and operated from 1881 to 1885. Kare Kremmling was the first postmaster. The name Kremmling became official in 1895.

When the Moffat railroad, the Denver, Northwestern & Pacific Railway, arrived in July 1906, Kremmling became a key shipping center for the county. The town was officially incorporated on May 14, 1904. In the 1900s, ranching became the main business in the valley around Kremmling. In 1906, Kasper Schuler built the town's first brick building. It housed a bottling works and a boarding house. Later, in 1933, this building became the Hotel Eastin.

Kremmling was also featured in a famous photo story. It was part of W. Eugene Smith's "Country Doctor" in LIFE magazine in 1948.

Geography and Location

Kremmling covers an area of about 1.3 square miles (3.39 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

The town is located where the Blue River and Muddy Creek meet. The Blue River flows from the south, and Muddy Creek comes from the north. This location makes it easy to reach other places. You can get to Dillon, Colorado, and the ski resorts in Summit County. You can also reach Rabbit Ears Pass, which is famous for snowmobiling. This pass is on the Continental Divide. From there, you can go down into Steamboat Springs.
