Lake Macdonald is a quiet, rural area in Queensland, Australia. It's part of the beautiful Shire of Noosa on the Sunshine Coast. In 2021, about 1,352 people lived here. It's known for the large lake nearby, which is also called Lake Macdonald.

What is Lake Macdonald?

The main feature of Lake Macdonald is the big lake itself! It's actually a reservoir formed by the Six Mile Creek Dam. This dam holds back water from Six Mile Creek. The lake's main job is to provide clean drinking water for the Sunshine Coast. But it's also a great spot for fun activities like boating and fishing. A road called Cooroy-Noosa Road goes right through the area.

History of the Area

For a few years, between 2008 and 2013, Lake Macdonald was part of the larger Sunshine Coast Region. Before and after that time, it has been part of the Shire of Noosa.

In 2021, the population of Lake Macdonald was 1,352 people. This number has stayed quite similar over the past few years. In 2011, there were 1,129 people, and in 2016, there were 1,363.

For high school, students attend Noosa District State High School. Its junior campus (for Years 7–9) is in Pomona, and the senior campus (for Years 10–12) is in Cooroy.

Local Facilities

Lake Macdonald has some important facilities, especially related to the lake.

  • The Lake Macdonald Water Treatment Plant is located on Lake Macdonald Drive. This plant helps clean the water from the lake so it's safe to drink.
  • There are two boat ramps where you can launch a boat onto the lake. One is at Mary River Cod Park on Collwood Road. The other is at Lake MacDonald Park on Lake MacDonald Drive. These are managed by the South East Queensland Water Corp.
  • You can also find two jetties (long walkways over the water) on the lake. One is at the north end of the lake, and the other is at the south end. Both jetties are managed by the Noosa Shire Council.
