Lampa is a city and a commune (a type of local government area) in Chile. It is located in the Chacabuco province, which is part of the Santiago Metropolitan Region. Lampa is found near the Chicauma mountain range. Part of this range is now included in the La Campana National Park.

The name Lampa comes from the Quechua language. It means 'the miner’s shovel'. Lampa is a community in the rural northwest area of Santiago, Chile. It is part of the administrative province of Chacabuco.

Lampa has seen a lot of growth! In 2002, it had about 40,228 people. By 2017, its population had grown to 201,034 inhabitants. This makes it one of the fastest-growing communities in the region.

Lampa is next to several other communities. These include Til Til, Colina, Pudahuel, Curacaví, Quilicura, and Quilpué.

Lampa's People and Land

Lampa has been recorded in official census documents since 1788. A census is an official count of a population. According to the 2002 census, Lampa covers an area of about 451.9 square kilometers. At that time, it had 40,228 residents. About 70% of these people lived in urban areas (cities and towns). The other 30% lived in rural areas (the countryside).

The land in Lampa is mostly flat plains. There are some rolling hills in the northern part. Like many places in the region, Lampa has a Mediterranean climate. This means it has green landscapes for most of the year. Even in summer, it can get very hot.

The climate is generally mild. However, temperatures can drop below 0 °C (32 °F) in winter. Frosts are common. In summer, temperatures can reach 30 °C (86 °F). In 2013, Lampa was the coldest community in the Santiago Metropolitan Region, reaching -8.4 °C (16.9 °F).

Lampa's businesses are growing, especially in the downtown area. This area is close to major highways. These highways connect Lampa to other parts of Santiago, Chile. More and more homes are being built here. This is because Lampa is close to Santiago and easy to reach by road.

How Lampa is Governed

As a commune, Lampa is a local administrative area in Chile. It is run by a municipal council. This council is led by an alcalde (mayor). The mayor is chosen directly by the people every four years.

The current mayor of Lampa is Graciela Ortúzar Novoa. She belongs to the RN political party. The mayor works with a group of councilors. These councilors help make decisions for the community.
