Leigham is an area located in the large city of Plymouth. You can find it in the English county of Devon. It sits in the north-east part of Plymouth.
Discovering Leigham
Leigham was once a small, separate place. It started as a tiny village, called a hamlet. It also had a large estate known as a manor. A manor was like a big country estate with a main house and land.
Over time, the city of Plymouth grew bigger. This growth is called urban expansion. Because of this, Leigham became a built-up part of the city.
A Glimpse into Leigham's Past
The name "Leigham" comes from a very old language. It is from Old English. The name means "an open space in a wood." This tells us that long ago, the area might have been a clearing in a forest.
In 1086, a famous book was written. It was called the Domesday Book. This book recorded details about land and property across England. In the Domesday Book, Leigham was called Leaham. It was listed as a manor with two farms.
Sadly, the old manor house is no longer standing. It became very damaged after the Second World War. In 1946, the city council of Plymouth bought the Leigham Manor Estate. They wanted to use the land to help rebuild the city.
Leigham Today
Leigham used to be part of a larger area called the parish of Plympton St Mary. A parish is a local administrative area, often linked to a church. Today, Leigham is part of the parish of Estover. The Estover parish was created in the 1970s. It was made from parts of the old manorial estate.
