What's in a Name?
It is not clear why the town of Leon was given its name. However, some towns in Iowa and Kansas were named after David Camden de Leon. He was known as the "Fighting Doctor" during the Mexican–American War. Another town, Leon, New York, got its name from the old Kingdom of Leon in Spain.
Where is Leon Located?
Leon is found about 1 mile (1.6 km) east of the Red River. This river creates the border between Texas and Oklahoma.
Oklahoma State Highway 76 goes north from Leon for about 4 miles (6.4 km) to State Highway 32. Leon is also about 22 miles (35 km) west-southwest of Marietta. Marietta is the main town, or county seat, of Love County.
The town of Leon covers an area of about 0.3 square miles (0.78 km²). All of this area is land.
