Les Genevez is a small town, also called a municipality, in Switzerland. It is located in the Jura canton, which is like a state or region. This charming place is known for its beautiful countryside in the Franches-Montagnes district.

Les Genevez was first mentioned in official records way back in 1381. At that time, it was known as Les Geneveys.

Les Genevez covers an area of about 13.64 square kilometers (5.27 square miles). A large part of this land, about 53.8%, is used for farming. Forests cover another big portion, about 41.4% of the area.

About 3.6% of the land has buildings or roads. A very small part, 0.1%, is rivers or lakes. The remaining 1.0% is land that cannot be used for farming or building.

Most of the built-up area is for houses and other buildings (2.1%). Roads and other transport areas make up 1.2%. In the forested areas, 36.3% is dense forest. Another 5.1% has orchards or small groups of trees.

For farming, 12.6% of the land grows crops. Pastures for animals cover 24.8%. Another 16.3% is used for alpine pastures, which are high mountain grasslands. All the water in the town is flowing water, like streams.

The municipality is part of the Franches-Montagnes district. It includes the main village of Les Genevez. There are also smaller settlements called hamlets, such as Le Prédame and Les Vacheries.

Some nearby towns are thinking about joining together in the future. These include Le Bémont, Les Bois, Les Breuleux, La Chaux-des-Breuleux, Les Enfers, Lajoux, Montfaucon, Muriaux, Le Noirmont, Saignelégier, Saint-Brais, and Soubey. They might form a new, larger municipality called Franches-Montagnes.

Education and Schools

In Les Genevez, many adults have completed higher levels of education. About 36.6% of the population finished non-mandatory upper secondary education. This is like high school. Another 7.2% completed even higher education, such as university or a specialized college.

The school system in the Canton of Jura works like this:

  • Kindergarten: Two years of optional kindergarten.
  • Primary School: Six years of primary school, which is required.
  • Lower Secondary School: Three years of required secondary school. Students are grouped by their abilities.
  • Upper Secondary School: After lower secondary, students can choose to go to an optional three or four-year upper secondary school. They can also start an apprenticeship to learn a trade.

During the 2009–10 school year, 45 students attended schools in Les Genevez. There was one kindergarten class with 7 students. The town also had 3 primary classes with 38 students.

There are only nine secondary schools in the whole canton. This means that all secondary school students from Les Genevez travel to another town for their classes.

In 2000, 4 students came to Les Genevez from other towns for school. At the same time, 31 students from Les Genevez went to schools outside the municipality.
