History of Lindale
The area where Lindale is today was home to people long before the town was officially started in 1871. In the early 1800s, the Caddo and Cherokee Native American tribes lived here. You can still find artifacts from the Caddo people near streams. The Cherokee were later forced to leave when the Republic of Texas was formed in 1836.
After the Civil War, a man named Richard B. Hubbard wanted an easier way to ship crops from his large farm. He convinced railroad companies to build tracks between nearby Tyler and Mineola. His brother-in-law, Elijah Lindsey, saw that the new railroad would bring growth. In 1871, Lindsey opened the first general store, and that's how Lindale began. A year later, Lindsey became the town's first mayor.
In 1996, the school board in Lindale decided to remove 32 books from school libraries. They felt these books did not fit with the community's values.
Geography of Lindale
