What Makes a Place a Landmark?
The Cincinnati City Council has a group called the Historic Conservation Board. They decide if a building or site is important enough to be a landmark. They look for places that have a lot of history or are special in some way.
How Places Become Landmarks
If someone wants a building or area to become a historic landmark, they need to apply. This can be done by the owner of the property, or even by the city council or local history groups. While the city is deciding, the building cannot be torn down.
First, a city expert checks out the place and writes a report. This report goes to the Historic Conservation Board. They then hold a public meeting where people can share their thoughts. After that, the board makes a recommendation.
Next, the City Planning Commission looks at the recommendation and also holds a public meeting. Finally, the city council votes. If they say yes, the place officially becomes a Local Historic Landmark!
