Ohio has a long history of battles and conflicts. For many years, this land was claimed by different groups. From 1679 to 1763, it was part of New France, controlled by the French. Then, from 1763 to 1783, Great Britain ruled the area. Finally, in 1783, it became part of the United States of America, and it has been ever since.

Many important wars affected Ohio directly. These include the French and Indian War (1754–1763), the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783), and the War of 1812 (1812–1814). There were also conflicts with Native American nations, like the Northwest Indian War (1785–1795) and Tecumseh's War (1811–1812). Later, during the American Civil War (1860–1865), Ohio saw some action too.
