The President of Iran is the highest official in the country chosen by the people. This article tells you about the people who have held this important job in the Islamic Republic of Iran since it started in 1980. The most recent president, Ebrahim Raisi, sadly died in a helicopter crash on May 19, 2024. Until a new president is elected, Mohammad Mokhber is serving as the acting president. The next election is set for June 28, 2024.

How the President's Role Began

After the Iranian Revolution in 1979, Iran became the Islamic Republic. A new set of rules, called a constitution, was needed. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini asked a special group, the Assembly of Experts, to write this constitution.

The new constitution was approved in late 1979. It said that the Supreme Leader was the head of the country. The president and prime minister were in charge of the government. Later, in 1989, the job of prime minister was removed.

The first presidential election in Iran happened on January 25, 1980. Abolhassan Banisadr won with a lot of votes. However, he was removed from office by the Parliament on June 22, 1981. A temporary group took over until a new election.

Mohammad-Ali Rajai was elected president on July 24, 1981. He started his job on August 2. Sadly, he and his prime minister died in an attack less than a month later. Another temporary group managed things until October 13, 1981. Then, Ali Khamenei was elected president.

Several presidents have served two terms. These include Ali Khamenei, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, Mohammad Khatami, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and Hassan Rouhani. Ebrahim Raisi was the eighth president, serving from 2021 until his death in May 2024. After his death, Mohammad Mokhber became the acting president. Masoud Pezeshkian was elected as the current president on July 6, 2024.
