The Little River is a small but important river in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, United States. It flows for about 7.4 miles (11.9 kilometers). This river is a branch, or tributary, of the Ammonoosuc River. All its water eventually joins the Connecticut River, which is a much larger river.
Where the Little River Starts
The Little River begins high up in the White Mountain National Forest. It starts in a special bowl-shaped area called a cirque. This cirque is found within the Twin Range of mountains.
- To the east, you'll find Mount Zealand.
- To the south is Mount Guyot.
- To the west is South Twin Mountain.
The river's source is about 3,320 feet (1,010 meters) above sea level. Imagine starting your journey from such a high place!
The River's Journey
From its high mountain source, the Little River flows north. It travels through the town of Bethlehem. The river carves its way through a deep valley. On one side of this valley is North Twin Mountain. On the other side is Mount Hale.
Eventually, the river reaches the town of Carroll. This is near a small community called Twin Mountain. The Little River then passes under U.S. Route 3, a major road. Finally, its journey ends when it flows into the Ammonoosuc River. This meeting point is about 1,319 feet (402 meters) above sea level.
Importance of the Little River
The Little River is very important to the local area.
