Lloyd Dee George (February 22, 1930 – October 7, 2020) was a very important judge in the United States. He served as a federal judge for the District of Nevada. A big building in Las Vegas, Nevada, called the Lloyd D. George Federal Courthouse, is named after him.

Education and Early Life

Born in Montpelier, Idaho, Lloyd George grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was the class president of Las Vegas High School in 1948. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Brigham Young University in 1955.

Military Service

After college, Lloyd George joined the United States Air Force as an officer. He served from 1955 to 1958. During his time in the Air Force, he flew large Boeing B-47 Stratojet bombers. He reached the rank of captain.

Becoming a Lawyer

After his military service, he went to law school. He earned his law degree (called a Juris Doctor) from the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law in 1961. From 1961 to 1974, he worked as a private lawyer in Las Vegas. He also served as a justice of the peace for Clark County, Nevada from 1962 to 1969. A justice of the peace is a local judge who handles smaller legal cases.

Serving as a Federal Judge

Lloyd George became a United States Bankruptcy Judge for Nevada in 1974. He held this position until 1984. During this time, he also worked on the Ninth Circuit United States Bankruptcy Appellate Panels from 1980 to 1984.

District Court Appointment

On April 18, 1984, President Ronald Reagan chose Lloyd George to be a judge for the United States District Court for the District of Nevada. The United States Senate approved his appointment on April 30, 1984. He officially started his new role on May 3, 1984.

He served as the Chief Judge for the District of Nevada from 1992 to 1997. After that, he took on a special role called "senior status" on December 1, 1997. This meant he could still hear cases but with a reduced workload. He passed away on October 7, 2020.

Important Roles in the Judiciary

In 1996, Judge George was chosen to represent the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit on the Judicial Conference of the United States. This group helps make important decisions for the federal court system. He also served on several other important committees.

He worked with judges from different countries to teach about law and court systems. This happened in Eastern Europe and countries that used to be part of the Soviet Union. He also helped update the long-term plan for the federal courts.

Other Public Service

Lloyd George was involved in many community activities. He was president of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. He also led the Clark County Association for Retarded Children, which is now known as Opportunity Village. This organization helps people with intellectual disabilities. He also served on boards for legal groups and helped guide a legal clinic at the Boyd School of Law.
