Longaví is a city and commune (a type of local government area) in Chile. Its name comes from the Mapudungun language and means "snake's head". It's located in the Linares Province, which is part of the Maule Region in the central part of Chile.

Longaví's Location and Landscape

The Achibueno River forms the northern border with Linares. The Longaví River separates it from Retiro in the south. The city of Longaví itself is located on the left side of the Liguay River. This area is part of Chile's very fertile central plain.

Longaví is about 316 kilometers (196 miles) south of Santiago, Chile's capital city. It's also just 18 kilometers (11 miles) south of Linares, which is the capital of the province. You can easily reach Longaví using the Pan-American Highway, also known as Ruta 5 Sur.

The eastern part of Longaví is covered by the foothills of the Andes mountains. This area is very mountainous and hilly, with beautiful views. It has many rivers and streams, and thick forests on the hills.

Among the snow-covered mountains, you'll find the stunning Nevado de Longaví. This is a stratovolcano known for its beauty and its perfect cone shape. It's a famous landmark that can be seen from almost anywhere in the central plain of the province and nearby areas.

Longaví's Past

Most of the land that makes up the Longaví commune today was once a huge estate owned by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). This land was given to the Jesuits in 1639. However, the Jesuits were later expelled from South America in 1767. After that, the estate was given to Mateo Sotomayor.

The village of Longaví was officially created in 1904. The commune, which is the local government area, was officially founded in 1937.

Economy: How Longaví Makes a Living

The main way people in Longaví earn money is through farming. They especially focus on growing rice and other cereals like wheat. This makes agriculture the most important economic activity in the area.

How Longaví is Governed

As a commune, Longaví is a third-level administrative division of Chile. It is managed by a municipal council. The leader of this council is an alcalde (mayor), who is chosen directly by the people every four years. From 2012 to 2016, the alcalde was Mario Briones Araice, from the PPD.

The municipal council also includes several members who help make decisions for the commune. These members are:

  • Matusalen Villar Morales (DC)
  • Manuel San Martín Romero (RN)
  • Robín Araya Acevedo (UDI)
  • Luis Briones Araice (PRSD)
  • Gonzalo Jara Reyes (PPD)
  • Lisandro Villalobos Tapia (UDI)

Longaví is also part of larger electoral divisions of Chile. For example, it is represented in the Chamber of Deputies by Guillermo Ceroni (PPD) and Ignacio Urrutia (UDI). They represent the 40th electoral district, which includes Longaví and several other communes like Retiro, Parral, Cauquenes, Pelluhue, and Chanco.

In the Senate, Longaví is part of the 11th senatorial constituency (Maule-South). It is represented by Hernán Larraín (UDI) and Manuel Matta (PDC).
