How Loretto Got Its Name
The city's name comes from a few different places. One is a Jesuit mission in Canada called Notre-Dame de la Jeune Lorette. This mission was a safe place for Huron Native American refugees.
Another inspiration was the village of Loretto, Kentucky. This is where a group of nuns, the Sisters of Loretto, began in 1812. The original idea for the name comes from Loreto, a small town in Italy famous for its special church.
