A Look at Loretto's History

How Loretto Got Its Name

The city's name comes from a few different places. One is a Jesuit mission in Canada called Notre-Dame de la Jeune Lorette. This mission was a safe place for Huron Native American refugees.

Another inspiration was the village of Loretto, Kentucky. This is where a group of nuns, the Sisters of Loretto, began in 1812. The original idea for the name comes from Loreto, a small town in Italy famous for its special church.

Becoming a City

Loretto officially became a city in 1940. The first mayor of Loretto was Albert Van Beusekom.

Youngest Mayor in the Country?

In 2010, Kent Koch was elected as Loretto's mayor. What made this special was that Koch was also a college student at St. Cloud State University. He was even a starting player on their baseball team! Many believed he was the only college student in the entire country who was also a mayor.
