Lotus Racing was a Formula 1 racing team. It started competing in the year 2010. The team was created by the government of Malaysia and a car company called Proton.
This team is not the same as the famous old Team Lotus. The name "Lotus" can be a bit confusing! The company Lotus is owned by Proton. The Malaysian government owns a big part of Proton. Lotus Racing was started to help promote Proton and its Lotus cars around the world.
The right to use the name Team Lotus belongs to David Hunt. He is the brother of James Hunt, who was a Formula 1 world champion in 1976. The only thing the new Lotus Racing team and the old Team Lotus had in common was the name.
The new Lotus race cars were painted green and yellow. These colors were chosen because they were the same ones used by the original Team Lotus.
Lotus Racing in Formula 1
Lotus Racing joined Formula 1 in the 2010 season. Their first race was the Bahrain Grand Prix. The team used a car called the Lotus T127. It had an engine made by Cosworth.
Their main drivers in 2010 were Jarno Trulli from Italy and Heikki Kovalainen from Finland. The team finished their first season in 10th place. They did not score any points.
The 2011 Season
In the 2011 season, Lotus Racing continued to compete. They used a new car called the Lotus T128. This car had an engine from Renault.
Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen were still the main drivers. The team also had test drivers. These included Karun Chandhok from India and Luiz Razia from Brazil. Lotus Racing finished 10th again in 2011. They still did not score any championship points.
