In developer beta. Drops support for MacBook Airs released from 2018 to 2019.

macOS Sequoia (also known as version 15) is the newest big update for Apple's macOS computer system. It's the next version after macOS Sonoma. Apple first showed it off at an event called WWDC 2024 on June 10, 2024. The name 'Sequoia' comes from a famous national park with giant trees in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

How it was Announced

Apple's software boss, Craig Federighi, first told everyone about macOS Sequoia. This happened at Apple's big event, the Worldwide Developers Conference, on June 10, 2024.

Cool New Features

macOS Sequoia comes with many new tools and improvements. Most of these are designed to help you get more work done and use your computer better.

  • iPhone Mirroring: This cool feature lets you see and control your iPhone right on your Mac screen. It looks like an app window on your computer.
  • Passwords App: There's a new app just for keeping track of all your passwords. It works across all your Apple devices.
  • Better Safari: The Safari web browser has been updated. It has a new way to read articles without distractions and a redesigned start page.
  • Game Porting Toolkit 2: This tool helps game developers bring Windows games to Mac computers more easily. It's like a special translator for games.
  • Apple Intelligence: Some Macs will get new smart features called Apple Intelligence. This includes a much smarter Siri, but it only works on Macs with Apple's own special chips (called Apple silicon).
  • Window Tiling: This feature helps you arrange your app windows on the screen. It's similar to how you can snap windows into place on Microsoft Windows computers.

What Macs Can Use It?

macOS Sequoia works on newer Mac computers. This includes Macs that have Apple's own Apple silicon chips. It also supports some older Macs with Intel chips, specifically those made from 2018 onwards.

However, it will no longer support some older MacBook Air models from 2018 and 2019.

Here is a list of Macs that can run macOS Sequoia:

  • iMac (models from 2019 and newer)
  • iMac Pro (the 2017 model)
  • MacBook Air (models from 2020 and newer)
  • MacBook Pro (models from 2018 and newer)
  • Mac Mini (models from 2018 and newer)
  • Mac Pro (models from 2019 and newer)
  • Mac Studio (all models released so far)

When Was it Released?

The very first test version of macOS Sequoia for developers came out on June 10, 2024. Just like with macOS Sonoma, anyone with a free Apple Developer account can try out this test version. You don't need to pay for a special developer subscription.
