Mamou's Interesting History

There are many stories about how Mamou got its name. One idea is that it came from a legendary Native American chief named Mamou. This large grassy area was called "Mamou Prairie" as early as the 1700s.

Some early English settlers called it "Mammouth Prairie" because it was so huge. When the French arrived, they shortened it to "Mamou," which means "mammoth." It's also a family name found in France.

How Mamou Became a Town

The town of Mamou was officially planned in 1907 by Curley C. Duson. He was the head of the Mamou Town Site Company. They opened an office and started selling land lots for $50 each. The original village was one square mile. Mamou officially became an incorporated town on January 11, 1911.

For many years, cotton was the main crop grown here. By 1915, Mamou had four cotton gins, which are machines that separate cotton fibers from their seeds. These gins produced thousands of bales of cotton. However, when the demand for cotton went down, local farmers started growing rice instead. Today, rice is the main crop in the area.
