Exploring Manly West's Location
Manly West is just one suburb away from the beautiful Moreton Bay. This means it's close to the water but not right on the coast. Most houses here are modern, low-set brick homes. The suburb is about 17.6 kilometers (11 miles) east of Brisbane's city center.
Neighbourhoods and Hills
Manly West has two special areas, or neighbourhoods:
- Green Camp: You'll find this area in the south-east part of the suburb.
- The Springs: This neighbourhood is located in the south.
There's also a small hill called Roles Hill. It rises about 48 meters (157 feet) high in the north-east of Manly West.
A Look Back: Manly West's History
Manly West used to be part of the nearby suburb of Manly. Manly itself got its name from Manly, New South Wales. In 1975, Manly West officially became its own separate suburb.

Many schools and churches have been an important part of Manly West's history.
Moreton Bay College's Journey
Moreton Bay Girls' High School first opened its doors in 1901. It started with 20 day students and 6 students who lived at the school. Two sisters, Alice and Anne Greene, founded it. In 1957, the school changed its name to Moreton Bay College.
The school moved to a new, larger site in Manly West in 1981. The primary school started there in 1984, and the high school followed in 1986. In 2001, the school celebrated 100 years! A special chapel building was even moved to the school in 2003.
Early Churches in the Area
The Springs Methodist Church opened in 1916. It was located on Manly Road. This church building is no longer there today.
Another church, Preston Road Methodist Church, opened in 1953. It was also known as Manly West Methodist Church. In 1977, it became the Preston Road Uniting Church. Today, the building is still standing and is used as a childcare center.
Manly West State School
Manly West State School welcomed its first students on January 28, 1958. A swimming pool was added to the school in 1977.
Other Community Buildings
- Wynnum Christian Community Church opened in 1962.
- Wondall Road State School opened in 1966 and was renamed Wondall Heights State School in 1967.
- A chapel for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints opened in 1972.
- Eastside Community Church opened in 1977.
In 1990, several Uniting Churches in the area joined together to form the Bayside Uniting Church. They built a new church on Wondall Road, which opened in 1991.
Moreton Bay Boys College, a school for boys, opened in 2003.
