History of Mantorville
Mantorville is famous for its special type of limestone. This stone was used to build many structures across the United States. When the limestone was first dug out of the ground, it was soft and easy to shape. But as it was exposed to the weather, it became very hard and strong. This made it a great material for long-lasting buildings.
The historic Hubbell House was built with this stone in 1856. The Dodge County Courthouse also used this stone in 1865. This courthouse was designed by E. Townsend Mix and is now the oldest working courthouse in Minnesota.
Mantorville is named after two brothers, Peter and Riley Mantor. They came to the area in 1853. A large part of the city, called the Mantorville Historic District, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. This district includes buildings along Minnesota Highway 57 and 5th Street.
