Manuden is a small village and civil parish located in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England. It is about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) north of Bishop's Stortford and 8 miles (13 km) south-west of Saffron Walden. The village has its own local government, called a parish council.
Village History
Manuden is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. This was a very important survey of England ordered by William the Conqueror. It helped him understand who owned what land and how much it was worth. Manuden was listed as one of the settlements in an area called Clavering hundred.
Part of Manuden is a special "conservation area." This means the area has historical or architectural importance. There are also several listed buildings in and around the village. These buildings are protected because they are historically significant.
St Mary the Virgin Church
The local church in Manuden is called St Mary the Virgin. Inside the church, there is a special plaque. It remembers a famous person named William Wade. He was a statesman and diplomat during the Jacobean era (the time when King James I ruled England).
A statesman helps run the country, and a diplomat represents their country in other nations. William Wade spent his retirement at Battles Hall, a house in Manuden. He is also buried in the church.
