Marcus Nathan Bent (born May 19, 1978) is a former English footballer. He played as a forward. Marcus was known for playing for many different clubs during his career. He played 573 games and scored 113 goals for 14 different teams.

He started his career at Brentford in 1995. Later, he joined Crystal Palace in 1998, where he played his first game in the Premier League. In 1999, he moved to Sheffield United after a short time at Port Vale.

In 2000, Marcus joined Blackburn Rovers. He then moved to Ipswich Town in 2001. During the 2003–04 season, he played on loan for Leicester City. In 2004, he transferred to Everton.

Two years later, he was sold to Charlton Athletic. He spent the 2007–08 season on loan at Wigan Athletic. In 2008, he joined Birmingham City. While at Birmingham, he also played on loan for Middlesbrough, Queens Park Rangers, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Sheffield United.

After leaving Birmingham, he played for six months in Indonesia with Mitra Kukar. After a break from the game, he had short spells in non-League football with Wick and Cornard United.

Playing Career Highlights

Starting at Brentford

Marcus Bent began his football journey in the Brentford youth team. He joined the first team in the 1995–96 season. He helped the Bees reach the play-offs in 1996–97. They played at Wembley in the play-off final but lost to Crewe Alexandra. He scored five goals in 29 games in the 1997–98 season.

Time at Crystal Palace

On January 8, 1998, Marcus joined Crystal Palace for £300,000. He showed his skills by scoring five goals in 16 games. This included goals at famous stadiums like Stamford Bridge and Anfield. However, he didn't score in 15 games during the 1998–99 season.

Moving to Port Vale

Marcus was sold to Port Vale for £300,000 on January 15, 1999. He played out of his usual position and didn't score in his first 15 games for the Valiants. In the 1999–2000 season, he scored once against Grimsby Town.

Success at Sheffield United

In October 1999, Marcus moved to Sheffield United for £375,000. He became the Blades' top scorer in the 1999–2000 season with 15 league goals. This included a hat-trick against West Bromwich Albion. He started the 2000–01 season well, scoring another hat-trick in the League Cup.

Promotion with Blackburn Rovers

Marcus joined Blackburn Rovers for £2 million in November 2000. He scored his first goal for Rovers against Burnley in December 2000. He scored 11 goals in 34 games in the 2000–01 season. This helped the club win promotion back to the Premier League.

Joining Ipswich Town

In November 2001, Marcus was sold to Ipswich Town for £3 million. He scored nine goals in 22 league starts. He was even named Premier League Player of the Month for January 2002. Even though he scored a lot, the Blues were relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2001–02 season. He scored 12 goals in 38 games in the 2002–03 season.

Loan to Leicester City

Marcus joined Leicester City on loan for the 2003–04 season. He scored ten goals in 35 games for the Foxes.

Playing for Everton

In June 2004, Ipswich sold Marcus to Everton for £450,000. He became a regular player at Goodison Park. He scored seven goals in the 2004–05 season. These goals helped the club get a spot in the Champions League.

Time at Charlton Athletic

In January 2006, Marcus signed with Charlton Athletic for £2.3 million. He scored on his first game as a substitute against Chelsea. He scored two goals in 35 games in the 2006–07 season.

Loan to Wigan Athletic

Marcus joined Wigan Athletic on loan on August 31, 2007. He scored a hat-trick against his old club Blackburn Rovers in a 5–3 win. This was special because two players scored hat-tricks in the same Premier League game for the first time. He scored seven goals in 32 games for the Latics.

Moving to Birmingham City

Marcus signed a three-year deal with Birmingham City in July 2008. He scored three goals in 33 games. He helped the club get promoted to the Premier League in the 2008–09 season.

Loan Spells

He went on loan to several clubs while at Birmingham. He joined Middlesbrough for two months in October 2009. He then spent three months on loan at Queens Park Rangers in February 2010. In August 2010, he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan. He later joined Sheffield United on loan until the end of the 2010–11 season.

Playing in Indonesia

On November 3, 2011, Marcus signed a one-year contract with Indonesia Super League club Mitra Kukar. He played 11 games and scored 4 goals before leaving the club in April 2012.

Later Career in Non-League Football

On September 13, 2017, at age 39, Marcus signed with Southern Combination League Premier Division club Wick. However, he left the club without playing any games. On January 3, 2020, he joined Eastern Counties League First Division North club Cornard United.

International Appearances

Marcus Bent played for England at under-21 level. He played in two games in May 1998. These games were against teams from South Africa and Argentina.

Personal Life and Family

Marcus Bent was born in Hammersmith, London. His parents are from Jamaica. Before he signed with Brentford in 1994, his name was Marcus Lecky. He has a younger brother named Elliott, who is also a footballer. Elliott played for youth teams and later for non-League clubs like Dorchester Town and Welling United.

After his football career, Marcus worked in the oil business for a time.
