During his time at the University of Mississippi, Mario was a very successful athlete. He was named an NCAA Division I All-American seven times and won six Southeastern Conference championships in cross country and track. He won a national title in the indoor mile race at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. He finished the race in 4 minutes and 7.54 seconds, just barely beating another runner named Morgan Beadlescomb.
