Marleston's Early Days
The first European settler in this area was a man named Donald McLean. In 1837, he chose a large piece of land, about 80 acres, which was originally part of Hilton.
McLean and his family worked hard, planting 20 acres of wheat. In 1838, they harvested the very first wheat crop in South Australia! This was a big moment for farming in the region.
How Marleston Grew
Later, in the 1860s, McLean's property was divided into smaller sections. In 1874, John Marles bought one of these sections. He then divided it even further in 1879. This is how the area eventually got its name, Marleston.
After World War I, many soldiers returned home and needed places to live. This led to a big increase in house building. A town planner named Charles Reade helped landowners work together. They developed an area called Galway Gardens. This new development was planned using "garden suburb" ideas, which meant lots of green spaces and a pleasant environment.
