Marmor is a small rural town and area in Queensland, Australia. It is part of the Rockhampton Region. In 2021, about 208 people lived in Marmor.

Exploring Marmor's Location
Marmor is located about 45 kilometers (28 miles) south of the city of Rockhampton. To the north, you'll find salt lakes near Port Alma. To the east and south-east, the area is bordered by Raglan Creek and Horrigan Creek. The main town area is in the north-west part of the locality.
Roads and Railways in Marmor
The Bruce Highway passes through Marmor. It comes from the east (near Raglan) and then goes towards the north-west (near Bajool). The highway goes around the south-west side of the town.
The North Coast railway line also runs through Marmor. It enters from the east, goes right through the middle of the town, and then heads towards the north-west.
There are a few railway stations in the area:
- Toonda railway station (no longer used)
- Marmor railway station
- Sisalana railway station (no longer used)
Toonda is also a small neighborhood within the Marmor area.
A Look Back at Marmor's History
The town of Marmor gets its name from the Marmor railway station. The word Marmor is Latin for marble, which is a type of stone found in this area.
Early Buildings and Services
The Marmor Provisional School first opened its doors on 6 November 1906. It became a State School on 1 January 1909. You can find it on Rogers Road.
The Marmor Post Office started operating around October 1906. Before that, a smaller receiving office had been open since 1883. The Post Office closed in 1982.
The Marmor School of Arts, a place for community events and learning, opened around December 1908.
Churches in Marmor
On Sunday, 6 November 1910, St Ita's Catholic Church was officially opened. It was built in the Gothic style, which is a type of architecture with pointed arches and tall windows.
Later, on Thursday, 16 November 1911, a United church was opened in Marmor. This church was next to the School of Arts and could seat 100 people. It was a place where different Protestant groups could hold their services.
There are several former churches in Marmor, including:
- St Faith the Virgin Mary Anglican Church on Rogers Street. It closed around 2013.
- St Ita's Catholic Church on Tynan Street.
- Marmor Uniting Church on Rogers Street.
Remembering Our Heroes
In August 2004, Marmor received money to build a war memorial. This memorial is in the Marmor Memorial Park. It's a special place for people to gather and remember soldiers on Anzac Day each year.
Marmor's Economy
Marmor is home to the Marmor Limestone Mine. This mine has its own special ovens and processing plant to prepare limestone. It's located on Sisalana Road.
In the early 1900s, the mine mostly supplied lime to Mount Morgan. The lime was transported using the North Coast railway line. Today, the lime from the mine is mainly used in farming. It helps to improve soil quality, especially by making acidic soil less acidic.
Education in Marmor
Marmor State School is a government primary school for students from Prep (the first year of school) to Year 6. It's located on Rogers Street. In 2018, the school had 13 students.
There isn't a high school in Marmor. The closest high school for students up to Year 10 is Mount Larcom State School in Mount Larcom. For students who want to complete all of high school (up to Year 12), the nearest option is Rockhampton State High School in Wandal, Rockhampton.
Community Life and Amenities
Marmor has several important community services and places:
- Marmor Police Station is located on Rogers Street.
- The Marmor branch of the Queensland Country Women's Association (QCWA) meets on Westacott Street. The QCWA is a group that supports women and communities in rural areas.
- Marmor Memorial Park is on Tynan Street. It's a nice spot with picnic areas and a playground for everyone to enjoy.
