History of Marshall
Early Settlers: Brothertown Indians
The first people to settle in the area that is now Marshall were the Brothertown Indians. This was a special tribe made up of different Native American groups from New England. They were led by Asa Dick and Samson Occum.
Around 1774, the Oneida Indians gave them land. The Brothertown Indians wanted to create a new home for Christian Native Americans. They built their homes near the Oriskany Creek. This creek was important because it powered their grist mills, which ground grain into flour.
First European Settlers
The first European settlers arrived in 1794. They chose to live in the higher areas, like Hanover and the west hills. The town of Marshall was officially created in 1829. It was formed from a part of the Town of Kirkland.
Geography and Location
Marshall covers an area of about 32.8 square miles (84.96 square kilometers). All of this area is land. There are no large bodies of water within the town's borders.
The southern edge of Marshall forms part of the border with Madison County, New York. This means that if you travel south from Marshall, you will enter a different county.
