Mauricio Herrera's Boxing Journey
Starting as a Pro
Mauricio Herrera began his professional boxing career when he was 27 years old. He signed with a well-known boxing company called Golden Boy Promotions.
Big Wins and Close Fights
On January 7, 2011, Mauricio had a big win. He defeated Ruslan Provodnikov, who had never lost a fight before. This victory earned Mauricio the USBA lightweight title. The fight was shown on ESPN's Friday Night Fights.
In 2014, Mauricio fought Danny García for some major boxing titles. These included the WBC and WBA (Super) light welterweight titles. Mauricio lost the fight by a close decision from the judges. However, many people watching, including boxing experts, felt that Mauricio had actually won the fight.
Later that year, on December 13, 2014, Mauricio faced Jose Benavidez Jr. He lost this fight too, and with it, his WBA interim light welterweight title. Again, the TV commentators, like Max Kellerman, Jim Lampley, and Roy Jones Jr., all believed that Mauricio was the true winner.
Mauricio shared his feelings about these close losses. He said, "A lot of people think I won those fights against Danny Garcia and Jose Benavidez. After losing to Benavidez, it really hurt. It felt like my career was being forgotten, which was frustrating."
Later Career Fights
Mauricio kept fighting. In March 2017, he won a fight against Hector Velazquez. He followed that up with another win in August 2017 against Jesus Soto Karass.
On December 15, 2018, Mauricio fought Sadam Ali and lost by a unanimous decision. This fight was part of a bigger boxing event at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
His last fight mentioned was on May 4, 2019. He fought Vergil Ortiz Jr.. Mauricio was defeated in the third round. This fight was interesting because there was a 17-year age difference between the two boxers.
