East Newark is a small town, called a borough, in the western part of Hudson County, New Jersey. It's a suburb of Newark, located right across the Passaic River. East Newark is actually the second-smallest town in New Jersey by land area!

East Newark became an official borough on July 2, 1895. It was formed from parts of Kearny and sits between the Erie Railroad tracks and Harrison.

As of the 2020 United States census, about 2,594 people live in East Newark. This was a small increase from the 2,406 people counted in 2010.

Where is East Newark?

East Newark is a very small place. The United States Census Bureau says it covers only about 0.13 square miles (0.32 square kilometers). Most of this is land, with a tiny bit of water.

The borough is surrounded by other towns. To the north, you'll find Kearny. To the south and east, it borders Harrison. Both of these towns are also in Hudson County. To the west, the Passaic River separates East Newark from Newark, which is in Essex County.

A special historical area, the Clark Thread Company Historic District, is located within the borough.

Schools in East Newark

The East Newark School District is where younger students go to school. It serves kids from pre-kindergarten up to eighth grade. In the 2021–22 school year, there were 220 students and about 19 teachers. This means there were about 11 or 12 students for every teacher.

For high school, students from East Newark go to Harrison High School in Harrison. This is part of an agreement between the two school districts.

In 2013, the East Newark district thought about sending its students to Kearny High School instead. This was because it would cost less money. However, in 2015, they made a new agreement to continue sending students to Harrison High School.

East Newark has about 2.71 miles of roads. Most of these roads are taken care of by the borough itself.

A major highway, Interstate 280, goes through the southern part of East Newark. You can get on or off this highway in nearby Harrison or Newark. The William A. Stickel Memorial Bridge crosses the Passaic River, connecting East Newark to Newark.

Public Transportation

You can use NJ Transit buses to get to Newark. The bus routes 30 and 76 serve East Newark.

For train travel, the closest NJ Transit station is Newark Broad Street Station. From there, you can catch trains on the Montclair-Boonton Line and the Morris & Essex Lines. This station also connects to the Newark Light Rail.

The PATH train system has a station in Harrison, which is just a few blocks south of East Newark.

If you need to fly, the closest airport with regular flights is Newark Liberty International Airport. It's about 4.8 miles south of East Newark. Other major airports like John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport are in New York City.
