Meal Fell is a small mountain, known as a "fell," located in the northern part of England's beautiful Lake District. It stands about seven kilometers (4½ miles) southwest of the village of Caldbeck. Meal Fell is one of four main fells in the Uldale Fells area. The other three are Longlands Fell, Great Cockup, and Great Sca Fell.
What is Meal Fell Like?
Meal Fell reaches a height of 550 meters (1,804 feet). Like other fells in the Uldale area, it is mostly covered in grass and has smooth slopes. However, its very top is stony, with some patches of loose rocks called scree.
Some people think the summit of Meal Fell might have been an old hill fort long ago. A writer named Bill Birkett noticed that the ground around the summit looks like it was dug out. He wondered if it could be the remains of an ancient fort, similar to Carrock Fell.
Meal Fell is connected to Great Cockup to the west by a path called Trusmadoor. This spot was humorously called the "Piccadilly of sheep" by Alfred Wainwright, meaning it was a busy place for sheep! To the east, Meal Fell is linked by a ridge to Great Sca Fell.
How to Climb Meal Fell
Most people start their climb of Meal Fell from a small road west of the Uldale Fells. The tiny villages, or "hamlets," of Orthwaite and Longlands are popular starting points.
Walkers usually approach the fell through the valleys. Many people choose to climb Great Cockup first. After reaching Great Cockup, they then continue their hike to Meal Fell and other nearby fells.
What Can You See from the Top?
The view from the very top of Meal Fell is partly blocked by other, taller fells nearby. However, the best view is towards the northwest, where you can see the sea in the distance.
