Early Life and Music Start
Michael Steven Bublé was born in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. His birthday is September 9, 1975. His father, Lewis Bublé, was a fisherman, and his mother, Amber, was a homemaker. Michael's family came to Canada from Italy. He has two younger sisters, Brandee and Crystal.
Michael dreamed of being a singer since he was two years old. When he was a teenager, he even prayed to become a singer. He started loving jazz music around age five. This happened when his family played Bing Crosby's White Christmas album. Some of his favorite singers were Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Elvis Presley.
His family first noticed his singing talent when he was 13. They were singing "White Christmas" in the car, and he sang a part very powerfully.
Michael also loved ice hockey and wanted to be a professional player. He was a big fan of the Vancouver Canucks. He often played hockey when he was young. He said if he was good enough at hockey, he might not be singing today.
From age 14, Michael worked for six summers as a fisherman with his father. He said it was the hardest physical work he had ever done. This experience taught him a lot about being responsible.
His first singing jobs were in nightclubs when he was 16. His Italian grandfather, Demetrio, helped him get these jobs. His grandfather would offer plumbing services in exchange for Michael to perform. He also paid for Michael's singing lessons.
Michael's grandfather was his best friend growing up. He introduced Michael to jazz music. Michael said that when his grandfather played him the Mills Brothers, something magical happened. He knew then that he wanted to be a singer and sing that kind of music.
Michael never stopped believing he would become a star. He said he was probably the only one who believed in his dream. He never learned to read music, but he used his feelings to write songs.
At 18, Michael won a local talent contest. He was disqualified for being too young, but the organizer, Bev Delich, entered him in another contest. After he won that one, he asked Delich to be his manager. For seven years, Michael worked hard, performing in clubs, on cruise ships, and at talent shows.
In the 1990s, Michael appeared in some TV shows. He was in Death Game and two episodes of The X-Files. His first national TV performance was in a 1997 documentary called Big Band Boom!. He also appeared often on Vicki Gabereau's talk show. These TV appearances helped him get noticed and improve his skills.
Michael was nominated for two Genie Awards in 2000 for songs he wrote for the film Here's to Life!. He also recorded three independent albums before becoming famous: First Dance (1996), Babalu (2001), and Dream (2002).
