Building Milton: A Look at Its History
Milton was built starting in the late 1940s, right after World War II. The city of Glasgow needed more homes because of the war and to replace old, crowded areas. So, they started a big building project.
Milton is next to the Parkhouse area on its south and east sides. The streets in Milton were named after different Scottish islands. Some of these names include Berneray, Birsay, Castlebay, Mingulay, Raasay, Scalpay, Stornoway, and Westray.
Before Milton was built, there were only a few private homes in the area. The first part of the new neighborhood was finished in 1952. More homes were added later, including tall apartment buildings in the late 1960s. The homes were different styles, from stone apartment buildings to pre-made apartments. All of these homes were rented as social housing, which means they were managed by the city for people to live in.
In the late 1980s, many of the older apartments were replaced with newer, more modern homes. The last of the original apartments on Scaraway Street were taken down in 2006.
Learning in Milton: Schools for Kids
Children in Milton go to St. Monica's (Milton) Primary School. This school was created by combining St. Ambrose and St. Augustine's schools. It also has Milton's Community Campus, a place for community activities. Other schools in the area are Miltonbank Primary School and Chirnsyde Primary School.
Places of Worship in Milton
There are Catholic and Methodist churches in Liddesdale Square, a nearby area. The Methodist Church shares a minister with the Methodist Church in Kilsyth. The Colston Milton Church, which is part of the Church of Scotland, is located on Egilsay Crescent.
Community Services and Transport
When Milton was first planned, it didn't have many places like pubs, cinemas, or community centers nearby. People had to take a bus or car to get to them. A community center was built in Liddesdale Road in the early 1970s. There were also no factories or big businesses in the area to offer jobs.
Milton has four main shopping areas: Skerray Street, Scaraway Street, Westray Circus, and Liddesdale Square. Several bus routes, including the 8, 29/129, M3, and 75, serve the area, helping people get around.
Local community groups have worked hard to improve Milton. For example, they successfully stopped a plan to build more houses on the site of the old Saint Augustine’s Secondary School. A group called LoveMilton is also working to build a new community center for the area.
