Miège was once a small town, or municipality, located in the Valais region of Switzerland. It was part of the Sierre district.

On January 1, 2021, Miège joined with two other towns, Venthône and Veyras, to create a new, larger municipality called Noble-Contrée. This means Miège is no longer a separate municipality on its own.

History of Miège

Miège was first mentioned in official records way back in 1226. At that time, its name was written as Mieio.

Long ago, the town was also known by its German name, Miesen. However, people in Miège no longer use that name today.

Exploring Miège's Geography

In 2009, Miège covered an area of about 2.5 square kilometers (about 1 square mile). A large part of this land, almost half (44.7%), was used for farming.

Forests covered a big section too, about 36.8% of the area. Buildings and roads took up 17% of the land. A very small amount was rivers or lakes (0.4%), and some land was not productive (1.6%).

In the forested areas, most of the land (34%) was covered with thick forests. A smaller part (2.8%) had orchards or small groups of trees. For farming, 40.3% of the land was used for orchards or vineyards, which means growing fruit trees or grapes.

Location and Village Style

Miège was located in the Sierre district. It sat among vineyards on the right side of the Rhone river. It was also west of the Raspille river, which forms a border with the German-speaking part of Valais.

The village of Miège itself was a haufendorf. This is a special type of village that grew without a clear plan. Its buildings are often close together around a central area, giving it an irregular shape.

At the very top of the shield, there is a golden sun shining brightly. This design represents the local agriculture and the sunny region.
