Mohammad Shahzad Mohammadi (Pashto: محمد شهزاد محمدي; born 10 January 1988) is a famous Afghan cricket player. He has played for his country in all three main types of international cricket matches. Shahzad is a right-handed opening batsman and also a wicketkeeper. He first played for Afghanistan in August 2009 against the Netherlands.
Shahzad was one of the first eleven players to play in Afghanistan's very first Test match. This historic game was against India in June 2018. He also holds a special record in One Day International (ODI) cricket. He scored a century (100 runs) when his team's score was very low, only 131 runs. This happened against India in the Asia Cup 2018, matching a record set by Pakistan's Shahid Afridi.

Early Life and Cricket Journey
Shahzad comes from a Pashtun family. His family is originally from Nangarhar Province in Afghanistan. They moved to a refugee camp in Peshawar, Pakistan, because of the war in Afghanistan. Shahzad spent most of his younger years in Peshawar.
International Cricket Career
Shahzad joined the Afghanistan cricket team as they started to become well-known in international cricket. He joined them for the 2009 Cricket World Cup Qualifier in South Africa. His strong playing helped Afghanistan gain One Day International (ODI) status. Since then, he has been a regular player for his country in all types of cricket games.
Playing First-Class Cricket
First-class cricket is a high level of the sport, just below Test cricket. Shahzad first played first-class cricket for Afghanistan in the 2009–10 ICC Intercontinental Cup.
Early Success in First-Class Matches
In August 2009, Shahzad played his first first-class match against a Zimbabwe XI. He scored 79 runs in his very first turn at bat. He was important in Afghanistan's win over Ireland, scoring 88 and 42 runs.
In February 2010, Shahzad made history. He became the first Afghan player to score a double century (200 runs) in a first-class match. He scored 214 runs without being out, helping Afghanistan chase down a huge score of 494 runs to beat Canada. He also scored another century against Scotland in August 2010.
Shahzad scored a half-century in the Intercontinental Cup final against Scotland. This helped Afghanistan win the title in their first year in the competition. He was the top run-scorer in the whole tournament, with 802 runs. He also had 28 dismissals as a wicket-keeper.
Later First-Class Performances
Shahzad scored a half-century in Afghanistan's first match of the 2011–13 ICC Intercontinental Cup. In January 2012, he played for a special team of top players from smaller cricket nations. This team played against England in Dubai. Shahzad scored two half-centuries in that match.
He performed very well in the 2015–17 ICC Intercontinental Cup. He scored his third and fourth first-class centuries against Papua New Guinea and Namibia. These centuries helped Afghanistan win important matches. In 2017, Afghanistan gained full Test status, meaning they could play Test matches regularly.
Test Cricket Debut
In May 2018, Shahzad was chosen for Afghanistan's first-ever Test match. This match was played against India on 14 June 2018. Shahzad opened the batting and scored 14 and 13 runs in the two innings. Afghanistan played another Test match against Ireland in February 2019.
One Day International (ODI) Cricket
Shahzad played in the 2009 ICC World Cup Qualifiers. Afghanistan earned ODI status after beating Namibia, where Shahzad scored an important 73 runs.
He made his ODI debut on 30 August 2009 against the Netherlands. In the second match of that series, he became the first Afghan player to score a century in an ODI match, scoring 110 runs.
Shahzad was part of the team that won the 2010 ACC Trophy Elite. He also helped Afghanistan finish third in the 2010 ICC World Cricket League Division One tournament, scoring two half-centuries. In August 2013, he scored a century and a half-century in a series against Namibia.
Twenty20 International (T20I) Cricket
In February 2010, Shahzad played his first Twenty20 International match against Ireland. He was a key player in Afghanistan's team for the 2010 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier. He scored 65 runs in the final against Ireland, helping Afghanistan win.
In the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier, Shahzad scored three half-centuries. He then played in the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 against India and South Africa.
Shahzad played some very strong innings in the 2015 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier. He scored 74 runs against the United Arab Emirates and 75 runs against Scotland. His innings against Scotland helped Afghanistan achieve their highest score at that time (210 runs).
Cricket World Cup and Recent Years
In April 2019, Shahzad was selected for Afghanistan's team for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. However, he was later removed from the tournament due to a knee injury.
In September 2021, he was named in Afghanistan's team for the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. On 31 October 2021, during a T20 World Cup match against Namibia, Shahzad became the first player from Afghanistan to score 2,000 runs in T20I cricket.
Twenty20 Franchise Cricket
Shahzad has also played in Twenty20 leagues around the world. In September 2016, he joined the Rangpur Riders in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). On his debut, he scored 80 runs. He was the top run-scorer for Rangpur that season with 350 runs.
In October 2018, he was chosen for the Chittagong Vikings team in the BPL. In September 2018, Shahzad was also part of the Paktia team in the first Afghanistan Premier League tournament. He was the leading run-scorer in that tournament, with 344 runs in nine matches.
Domestic Cricket in Afghanistan and Pakistan
Shahzad has played some domestic cricket in Afghanistan. He played for the Band-e-Amir Dragons and also captained the Spin Ghar Tigers. He scored two centuries for Spin Ghar Tigers and helped them reach the final of a tournament.
He also played in the Shpageeza Cricket League, Afghanistan's national Twenty20 competition. He played for the Boost Defenders and later for the Kabul Eagles, who won the 2016 tournament. Shahzad scored 90 runs in the 2016 final and was named the best player of the match.
Shahzad has also played domestic cricket in Pakistan. He played for teams like Port Qasim Authority and Habib Bank Limited. He holds the record for the fastest 50 runs in T10 cricket history, scoring 74 runs off just 16 balls.
Cricket Records and Achievements
- Shahzad holds the record for the most dismissals (5) by a wicketkeeper in a single T20I match. He is the first wicketkeeper to achieve this.
- In 2016, during a series against Zimbabwe, Shahzad scored his best T20I innings of 118 runs off 68 balls. This is the second-highest T20I score by a player from an associate team.
- On 8 March 2016, Shahzad became the first player from an associate team to score 10 scores of fifty or more runs in T20Is.
- At the end of 2016, Shahzad was named the ICC's Associate and Affiliate Player of the Year. This award recognizes the best player from teams that are not full members of the ICC.
- On 20 January 2017, Shahzad made history by scoring two half-centuries in two different international matches on the same day. He scored 80 against Oman and 52 not out against Ireland.
- Shahzad is one of only a few players in T20I history to hit 200 fours (boundaries).
- He hit the joint fastest half-century in T10 history, reaching 50 runs off just 12 balls for Rajputs in the 2018 T10 League.
