Ulysses S. Grant's Last Days
A very important person in American history, Ulysses S. Grant, spent his final weeks in Moreau. Grant was a famous general during the American Civil War and later became the President. He stayed at what is now the Grant Cottage State Historic Site. Here, he worked hard to finish writing his memoirs, which are like his life story.
The cottage is on Mount McGregor and is surrounded by beautiful nature. After Grant passed away, many thousands of Civil War veterans visited the site to honor him. Today, the cottage is on the grounds of what used to be the Mount McGregor Correctional Facility, a prison that is now closed.
