History
How Mount Aragorn Got Its Name
The first people to climb Mount Aragorn reached the top in 1972. These climbers were Peter Jordan, Fred Thiessen, and Eric White. This same group also made the first climbs of nearby Mount Gandalf and Mount Shadowfax.
The names for these mountains come from famous books. They are from "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings". These fantasy novels were written by J. R. R. Tolkien. The climbers read these stories while waiting for bad weather during their 1972 trip.
Karl Ricker of the Alpine Club of Canada suggested the name "Mount Aragorn" in 1978. The Canadian government officially approved the name on January 23, 1979.
Climate
Mount Aragorn is in a subarctic climate zone. This means it has long, cold winters and short, cool summers. Most weather systems come from the Pacific Ocean. They travel east toward the Coast Mountains.
When the air hits the mountains, it is forced to rise. This process is called Orographic lift. As the air rises, it cools and drops its moisture. This causes a lot of rain or snow, especially in winter. Temperatures can drop very low, sometimes below −20 °C. With wind, it can feel even colder.
The best time to climb Mount Aragorn is usually from July through September. The weather is more stable and warmer then.
