Where is Mount Farquhar?
Mount Farquhar is located in the southern part of Kings Canyon National Park. It sits on a mountain range called the Great Western Divide. This range separates different river systems. The mountain is north of other peaks like North Guard and Mount Brewer.
The western side of Mount Farquhar has slopes that feed into Sphinx Creek. The eastern slopes feed into Cross Creek and North Guard Creek. All these small creeks flow into Bubbs Creek. Bubbs Creek then joins the South Fork of the Kings River.
How Mount Farquhar Got Its Name
For a long time, this mountain was known as Notch Peak. People called it this because it had a clear "notch" or dip in its shape when seen from the east.
In 1989, the mountain got its official name, Mount Farquhar. This was done to honor Francis Farquhar, who had passed away 15 years earlier. Francis Farquhar was a local mountaineer and writer. He was also a director of the Sierra Club. He worked hard to protect the beautiful Kings Canyon area of the Sierra Nevada mountains.
Climbing Mount Farquhar
The first time people successfully climbed Mount Farquhar was on July 17, 1932. A large group of climbers used the South Ridge route. This group included Dorothy Baird, D.R. Brothers, Alice Carter, Norman Clyde, Glen Dawson, William Dulley, Patricia Goodhue, Katherine Lindforth, Julie Mortimer, Arthur Neld, Lincoln O'Brien, Thomas Rawles, John Schager, and Alfred Weiler.
They traveled across the land to reach the Sphinx Lakes. From there, they climbed to a low point between peaks, called a col, south of Mount Farquhar. They then went up the mountain using its south ridge.
Other ways to climb Mount Farquhar have been found since then. These include the Northwest Ridge, the Blank Stair Route, and the Northeast Face. The Northeast Face was first climbed in September 1971 by Jeanne Neal and Galen Rowell.
