About Mount Sherman
Mount Sherman is known for being one of the easier "fourteeners" to climb. Many people recommend it for beginners who want to try climbing a very tall mountain. It is also famous for a unique event: it is the only fourteener where an airplane has successfully landed on its very top!
The Sherman Mine
The Sherman mine is located on the western side of Mount Sherman. It sits high up, at about 12,200 feet. This mine was very important for producing valuable metals.
- What was found? The Sherman mine produced over 10 million ounces of silver. It also yielded lead and zinc. These metals were worth hundreds of millions of dollars!
- Where were they found? The silver, lead, and zinc were found inside a type of rock called dolomite. This rock formed a very long time ago, during the Early Mississippian period.
- How did they form? The valuable minerals formed inside an ancient cave system. This cave system developed within the dolomite rocks. The minerals were placed into these old caves about 272 million years ago.
Today, secondary ore minerals from the Sherman mine are popular with mineral collectors. These are minerals that formed later from the original ores. Hikers and mountaineers often visit the old buildings and structures of the historic Hilltop Mine. These ruins are located above the more recent Sherman mine workings and are a popular spot for photos.
