History of Mundesley
The name Mundesley comes from old words. It means 'Mul's' or 'Mundel's wood or clearing'.
Mundesley is mentioned in the Domesday Book from 1086. This was a very old survey of England. The village's name was written as Muleslai. The Domesday Book also noted that Mundesley had a church back then.
Mundesley in World War II
Mundesley has a special memorial called the Mundesley Memorial Bomb. It honors the brave Army teams who removed dangerous mines after the Second World War. There is also a war memorial inside the local church. Another one is on the seafront, near the Coastwatch station.
Close to the church, you can see a World War II gun emplacement. This was a place where guns were set up to defend the coast. Because of coastal erosion, which is when the sea slowly wears away the land, this old gun position now stands very close to the cliff edge.
How Mundesley is Governed
Mundesley is part of an "electoral ward" with the same name. An electoral ward is an area that elects its own representatives to a local council. This ward also includes the village of Bacton. In 2011, about 4,191 people lived in this ward.
Fun for Visitors
Mundesley is a very popular place for holidays by the sea. People love its sandy beaches. You can find many holiday chalets, caravan parks, and hotels here. Just south of Mundesley, on the way to Paston, there is a famous windmill called Stow Mill.
Mundesley was a popular seaside resort during the Victorian era. This was a long time ago, when Queen Victoria ruled. The village even had its own train station, which helped bring visitors. However, the station closed in 1964.
Mundesley Golf Course
The village has an old golf course in the Mun Valley. It was started in 1901. A famous golfer named Harry Vardon helped design it. He won the Open Championship six times! Harry Vardon stayed nearby while he was getting better from an illness. He had a long connection with the golf course. People say he hit his only hole-in-one on what is now the sixth hole. The course was changed a bit during wartime for farming. It was then redesigned after the wars ended.
What Mundesley Offers
All Saints' Church
All Saints' Church is a beautiful church located on the cliffs above the sea. For over a hundred years, parts of the church were in ruins. But it was restored and rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1904, the western part was made bigger for an organ. Then, in 1914, the main part of the church was extended. A new chancel was built where the old one used to be.
Village Centre Shops and Services
The centre of Mundesley has many useful shops. You can find a butcher's shop, clothing stores, and places for arts and crafts. There's also a chemist, a public library, and convenience stores. Mundesley has its own medical centre for healthcare. It also has a primary school for younger children.
Close to the seafront, there's an adventure island crazy golf park. It's a fun place to play mini-golf! There is also a very small maritime museum. This museum is also the local lookout for the National Coastwatch Institution. This charity has over 50 stations along the British coast. They help keep an eye on the sea 365 days a year.
Places to Eat and Stay
Mundesley has two pubs. One of the oldest is The Ship Inn, right on the seafront. Its first owner was listed in 1836. The pub is built with flint, which is a common stone in the older parts of the village. A little way inland, on the road to Paston, is the Royal Hotel. People say that Lord Nelson, a famous British admiral, once lived there for a while.
