Nathan Ghar-jun Adrian (born December 7, 1988) is an American swimmer. He has won five Olympic gold medals. He used to hold the American record for the 50-meter freestyle race.
Nathan has won many medals in big international swimming events. He has earned twenty gold, seven silver, and five bronze medals. These include medals from the Summer Olympics, FINA World Aquatics Championships, and Pan Pacific Swimming Championships. At the 2008 Summer Olympics, he helped the U.S. team win gold in a relay. In 2012, he won gold in the 100-meter freestyle and another relay. He also got a silver medal in a freestyle relay. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, he won two more gold medals in relays. He also earned two bronze medals in individual races.

Early Life and School
Nathan Adrian was born in Bremerton, Washington, in 1988. His mother, Cecilia, is from Hong Kong and works as a nurse. His father, James, was a nuclear engineer.
Nathan has an older sister, Donella, and an older brother, Justin. Both of his siblings were swimmers. Nathan started swimming when he was five years old because of them. He finished high school in 2006 at Bremerton High School.
After high school, Nathan went to the University of California, Berkeley. He studied public health and graduated in 2012. While in college, he was a five-time champion in NCAA swimming events. He won the 50-yard freestyle twice and the 100-yard freestyle three times.

2008 Short Course World Championships
In 2008, Nathan competed in the Short Course World Championships. He won two gold medals. One was for the 100-meter freestyle race. The other was for the 4×100-meter freestyle relay. His team set a new world record in the relay. He also won a silver medal in the 4×100-meter medley relay.

Nathan qualified for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. He swam in the first part of the 4×100-meter freestyle relay. His team set a world record in the heats. Even though he didn't swim in the final race, he still earned a gold medal. This is because he was part of the team that helped them get there.
2009 World Championships
At the 2009 World Aquatics Championships in Rome, Nathan won two more gold medals. He helped the U.S. team win the 4×100-meter freestyle relay. He swam the last part of the race and helped his team win. This set a new championship record. He also won gold in the 4×100-meter medley relay.
2010 Pan Pacific Championships
Nathan had a great performance at the 2010 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships. He won four gold medals. He won the 100-meter freestyle race. He also won the 50-meter freestyle, beating a world-record holder. Nathan helped his team win gold in both the 4×100-meter freestyle and 4×100-meter medley relays.

Nathan qualified for his second Olympics in 2012. He won a silver medal in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay. He swam the first part of the race.
He then won his first individual Olympic gold medal. This was in the 100-meter freestyle race. He won by a tiny bit, just 0.01 seconds! Nathan was the first American man to win this event since 1988.
He won another gold medal in the 4×100-meter medley relay. His team set a new Olympic record. After his success, a street in his hometown was named "Nathan Adrian Drive."
2013 World Championships
At the 2013 World Championships, Nathan won a silver medal. This was in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay. He also earned a bronze medal in the 100-meter freestyle. He finished fourth in the 50-meter freestyle.
2015 World Championships
In 2015, Nathan set a new American record in the 50-meter freestyle. He won a silver medal in that event. He also won two gold medals in relays. One was in the 4×100-meter mixed freestyle relay. His team set a new world record in that race. The other gold was in the 4×100-meter medley relay.

Nathan competed in his third Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. He won four medals there. He helped the U.S. team win gold in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay. He also won a bronze medal in the 100-meter freestyle. He then won another bronze in the 50-meter freestyle.
He finished his Olympics with another gold medal. This was in the 4×100-meter medley relay. His team set a new Olympic record in this race.
Later Career (2018-2021)
At the 2018 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, Nathan won a gold medal. This was for the men's 4×100-meter medley relay.
In 2019, he competed at the World Aquatics Championships. He won a gold medal in the men's 4×100-meter freestyle relay. Later that year, he went to the Pan American Games. There, he won gold in two relays. He also earned silver medals in the 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle races.
Nathan tried to qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics (held in 2021). He swam in the 100-meter and 50-meter freestyle events. He did not make the Olympic team this time. However, he still earned a spot on the U.S. National Team for the 14th time.

Personal Life
In 2017, Nathan Adrian got engaged to Hallie Ivester. They got married in 2018. In 2021, they welcomed their daughter.
Fun Facts
Nathan Adrian appeared on the TV show MythBusters in 2009. He helped test if someone could swim as fast in syrup as in water. The hosts found that his results were not clear. This was because swimming in syrup was too different from water for him.
In 2014, Nathan was honored. He was added to The Robert Chinn Foundation Asian Hall of Fame.
