Rockville Cemetery and Bristol and Mexico Monument

The Rockville Cemetery at 45 Merrick Road in Lynbrook, New York started as a small burial ground in 1799. Over time, it became the final resting place for many early settlers of the Near Rockaway area. This cemetery is also home to monuments for two shipwrecks from the 1840s. These shipwrecks led to important changes in how ships approached New York Harbor. The monuments mark a mass grave for 139 passengers, many of whom were Irish immigrants escaping a terrible famine.
