Mizero Ncuti Gatwa (born 15 October 1992) is a talented actor from Rwanda and Scotland. He started his acting journey on stage at the Dundee Repertory Theatre. He became very well known for playing Eric Effiong in the Netflix TV show Sex Education from 2019 to 2023.
Ncuti also had roles in the popular movie Barbie (2023) and the TV series Masters of the Air (2024). He gained even more fame when he became the Fifteenth Doctor in the classic BBC science fiction series Doctor Who in 2023.

Early Life and Education
Ncuti Gatwa was born in Nyarugenge, Kigali, Rwanda, on 15 October 1992. His father, Tharcisse Gatwa, is a journalist.
His family moved from Rwanda during a difficult time in 1994 and made their home in Scotland. They lived in cities like Edinburgh and Dunfermline. Ncuti went to Boroughmuir High School and Dunfermline High School. Later, he moved to Glasgow to study acting at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Acting in 2013. The Conservatoire also gave him an honorary Doctorate in 2022.
Acting Career Highlights
Early Stage Work and Sex Education Breakthrough
After finishing university, Ncuti joined the Dundee Repertory Theatre. He acted in several plays there, including Victoria. In 2014, he had a small part in the TV show Bob Servant. That same year, he was recognized for his role as Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet at Home, Manchester.
In 2015, he appeared in the TV show Stonemouth. He also performed in a play called 946, which was based on a book about the preparations for D-Day. In 2016, Ncuti played Demetrius in A Midsummer Night's Dream at Shakespeare's Globe.
In May 2018, Ncuti was cast as Eric Effiong in the Netflix series Sex Education. The show became very popular when it was released in 2019. Critics praised Ncuti's performance as Eric. He won a BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Actor in Television in 2020. He was also nominated three times for a BAFTA Television Award for Best Male Comedy Performance.
Becoming the Doctor in Doctor Who
In April 2022, Ncuti joined the cast of Greta Gerwig's movie Barbie. He also performed at the 2023 Coronation Concert.
A big announcement came in May 2022: Ncuti Gatwa would be the new Doctor in Doctor Who! He is the first Black actor to lead the series. He is also the fourth Scottish actor and the first actor born outside the United Kingdom to play the role.
Ncuti first appeared as the Fifteenth Doctor in "The Giggle" on 9 December 2023. This was one of the special episodes celebrating the show's 60th anniversary. His first full episode, "The Church on Ruby Road", aired on Christmas Day 2023. Critics have highly praised his performance in Doctor Who. Many writers have called his acting "amazing" and "captivating." Some believe he is bringing Doctor Who into an exciting new era.
In April 2024, it was announced that Ncuti would star as Algernon Moncrieff in the play The Importance of Being Earnest. This play will be performed at the National Theatre in London from November 2024 to January 2025.
Personal Life
Ncuti Gatwa enjoys astrology and is a Libra Sun. He has shared that he prefers not to label himself. He believes that the work he does as an actor is what is most important.
