Necochea is a busy port and a popular beach city in the southwest part of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. It sits right on the Atlantic coast, where the Quequén Grande River meets the sea. The city is about 528 kilometers (328 miles) from Buenos Aires and 120 kilometers (75 miles) southwest of Mar del Plata. In 2010, about 90,000 people lived in the city itself. Necochea is also the main government center for the wider Necochea Partido area.
The nearby Port of Quequén is on the eastern side of the Quequén Grande River. It is one of Argentina's most important ports. It helps send out farm products from the southeast of Buenos Aires Province to other places.

Necochea's History and Growth
Early Explorers and Founding the City
The area around Necochea was first explored by Jesuit priests José Cardiel and Thomas Falkner. They reached the mouth of the Quequén Grande River in 1748. Necochea was officially started on October 12, 1881. It was built as a defense spot against raids by local groups called Malón. Ángel Murga, a commander in the National Guard, founded the settlement.
The new town was named after General Mariano Necochea. He was an important military leader during the Argentine War of Independence. The city was built on land owned by Eustoquio Díaz Vélez, jr. His father, General Eustoquio Díaz Vélez, also played a big role in the fight for independence.
Connecting the City: Railways and Bridges
A train station for the Buenos Aires Great Southern Railway opened in Necochea in 1894. This helped the city grow. In 1902, the Díaz Vélez family created the Villa Díaz Vélez resort. By 1911, nearby communities joined to become part of Necochea.
A suspension bridge was built in 1929, making it easier for cars to reach Necochea. This bridge was named after President Hipólito Yrigoyen. It was one of only two such bridges in Argentina at the time. A tram service also ran in the town from 1913 to 1940.
Port Development and Tourism
The Port of Quequén opened in 1922. This made the area a key place for sending out farm goods from Argentina. By 1954, the port handled one million tons of goods. This grew to over 3 million tons by 1991.
Necochea became a popular place for people in Argentina to visit during the 20th century. By 2011, there were over 50,000 hotel rooms. During the summer, more than 95% of these rooms were full! The city's beaches stretch for 72 kilometers (45 miles) and can be up to 200 meters (656 feet) wide.
Parks and Local Attractions
The Miguel Lillo Park was created in 1979. It is a huge park, covering 640 hectares (1600 acres). It is Argentina's only public maritime forest nature reserve. The park is also famous for its swan's lake and a small tourist railway. Since 1981, the Regional Historical Museum has been located in the park. It is in a beautiful Spanish Colonial Revival house that used to belong to the Díaz Vélez family.
Other cool places to see in Necochea include:
- Seashore grottoes (caves). One famous cave is Cueva del Tigre. It is named after a 19th-century gaucho (Argentine cowboy) who supposedly hid there from authorities for years.
- The Parish of Our Lady of Lourdes, a church built in 1957.
- The Necochea Golf Club, which opened in 1955.
- The Fishermen's Pier, built in 1970.
- The rapids on the Quequén Grande River.
- Quequén port, which has two breakwaters (built in 1908), a lighthouse (from 1921), and a South American sea lion reserve.
- The city's casino was first opened in 1929. A new, modern building opened in 1973. It was rebuilt after a fire in 2001, but sadly burned down again in 2020 and no longer exists.
Fun Events and Festivals
Necochea hosts several popular events:
- The National Festival of Children's Shows (Fiesta Nacional de Espectáculos para Niños). This festival has been held since 1962 in Miguel Lillo Park every Epiphany Day (January 6).
- The Festival of Cultures (Fiesta de las Colectividades). This event celebrates the many immigrant communities and their families who have helped build Necochea and Argentina. It takes place at the end of January. The festival has stands representing cultures common in Argentina, like Italians, Spaniards, Danish Argentines, Middle Easterners, and Germans. In recent years, Chileans have also joined.
Necochea's Climate
Necochea has a very warm oceanic climate. This means it has warm to hot summers and mild winters. Rain falls throughout the year. The summer nights are a bit cool, and the rainfall keeps it from being a subtropical climate. In January, the average temperature is about 21°C (70°F). In winter months, it's around 8°C (46°F), which is typical for an oceanic climate.
