The Nera (which means Nar in Latin) is a river in central Italy. It starts in the Marche region but flows mostly through the Umbria region. The Nera is the most important tributary of the famous Tiber River.

Exploring the Nera River's Path

The Nera River is about 116 km (72 mi) long. Its drainage basin, which is the area of land where all the water flows into the river, covers about 4,280 km2 (1,653 sq mi).

Where Does the Nera River Start?

The Nera River begins high up in the Monti Sibillini mountains. This area is part of the beautiful Monti Sibillini National Park (known in Italian as Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini). The river's source is at an elevation of about 902 m (2,959 ft). You can find its starting point in the town, or comune, of Castelsantangelo sul Nera, which is in the Province of Macerata in the Marche region.

Journey Through Italian Regions

The Nera River first flows through a few towns in the Marche region, like Castelsantangelo sul Nera, Viso, and Ussita. After flowing for about 20 km (12 mi), it enters the Umbria region.

As it continues its journey, the river passes through the province of Perugia. Then, it enters the province of Terni and flows towards the east. It even goes right through the city of Terni.

After leaving Terni, the Nera River flows through the city of Narni. Finally, it reaches the Lazio region, specifically the Province of Viterbo. Soon after, it joins the Tiber River as a left tributary near the city of Orte.

Main Rivers Joining the Nera

Only the rivers that join the Nera from its left side are quite important. The smaller streams that join from the right side are not as big.

Here are the main rivers that flow into the Nera from the left:

  • Corno River - This river is about 20 km long.
  • Velino River - This is a longer river, about 90 km in length.
  • Serra River - This river is about 17 km long.
