The 27th congressional district of New York is a special area in western New York that elects one person to represent it in the United States House of Representatives. Think of it like a team, and this district is one of the teams that sends a player to the big game in Washington D.C.
This district includes all of Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming, and Livingston counties. It also covers parts of Erie, Monroe, Niagara, and Ontario counties.
Currently, the district is represented by Republican Chris Jacobs. He became the representative in 2020. Before him, Chris Collins was the representative. He left his job, and a special election was held for someone new to take his place. Chris Jacobs won that election.

Understanding Congressional Districts
What is a Congressional District?
A congressional district is a part of a state that has a certain number of people living in it. Each district gets to choose one person to represent them in the United States House of Representatives. These representatives work in Washington D.C. to make laws for the whole country.
Why are Districts Important?
Districts help make sure that people from all over a state have a voice in the government. The number of districts a state has depends on its population. States with more people have more districts and more representatives.
Who Represents the District?
Meet Chris Jacobs
Chris Jacobs is the current representative for New York's 27th congressional district. He is a member of the Republican Party. His job is to listen to the people in his district and bring their ideas and concerns to the U.S. House of Representatives.
How Representatives are Chosen
People in each district vote for the person they want to represent them. This happens during elections. The person who gets the most votes wins and becomes the representative for that district. They serve for two years, and then there's another election.
How the District Votes
Presidential Election Trends
The way people in a district vote can change over time. Here's how the 27th district has voted in some past presidential elections:
Year | Office | Results |
---|---|---|
1992 | President | Bush 42–33% |
1996 | President | Clinton 43–43% |
2000 | President | Gore 53–41% |
2004 | President | Kerry 53–45% |
2008 | President | McCain 54–44% |
2012 | President | Romney 55.3–42.9% |
2016 | President | Trump 59.7–35.2% |
This table shows which presidential candidate got more votes in this district during those years. You can see that sometimes the district voted for a Republican candidate, and other times for a Democratic candidate.
