Newbridge is a village in Scotland, located west of Edinburgh. It is part of the Kirkliston area. Before 1975, Newbridge was in Midlothian. Now, it is on the western edge of the City of Edinburgh.
The village started as a small group of buildings around a crossroads. This was just east of the original New Bridge, which crosses the River Almond. Today, the area is busy with many roads and industrial buildings. These all meet at the Newbridge Roundabout, where the M8 and M9 motorways connect.
In 2011, Newbridge (including Ratho Station) had about 1,074 people living there.

Discovering Newbridge's Past
Archaeologists dug up parts of Newbridge in 2007 and 2014. They found signs of human activity from very old times, like the Mesolithic period, all the way to the Middle Ages.
Ancient Life in Newbridge
The oldest signs of people living here date back to 6640–6230 BC. This was during the Mesolithic period, also known as the Middle Stone Age. Later, during the Middle Bronze Age (around 1700-1200 BC), people had small settlements. There were also signs of people living here before the Romans arrived, during the Iron Age.
Archaeologists think there might even be an old burial ground with large mounds, called a barrow cemetery. They also found a piece of Dere Street, which was a famous Roman road.
Farming Through the Ages
Evidence shows that people farmed in this area during the 11th and 12th centuries. Farming continued into the 13th and 14th centuries AD. This pattern of farming is similar to what archaeologists have found in other medieval settlements in the Lothians area.
The Newbridge Chariot
Near an old Bronze Age burial mound called Huly Hill, archaeologists made an exciting discovery. They found the remains of an Iron Age chariot burial. This means a chariot was buried with someone, likely an important person. This was the first time a chariot burial like this had ever been found in Scotland!
Places to Visit in Newbridge
Newbridge has many useful places and businesses. You can find an industrial estate with different companies. There are also several car dealerships.
You can visit a Royal Bank of Scotland branch or grab a meal at McDonald's. If you're hungry for traditional British food, there's a fish and chip shop. For a drink or a bite, the Newbridge Inn is a historic pub that opened in 1683. It even has a big beer garden!
Other local spots include a bowling club, a petrol station, and a Premier Inn hotel with a restaurant. You can also find a cafe. A Scotmid supermarket is close by in Ratho Station. For bigger shopping trips, larger supermarkets are in Broxburn. If you need a doctor or a chemist, those are in Ratho.
Getting Around Newbridge
Newbridge is a very important place for transport, especially by road.
Road Connections
The Newbridge roundabout was first built in 1970. It helped connect the M8 (which goes to Glasgow) and the M9 (which goes to Stirling). It also linked to the A8 and the A89 roads.
This roundabout became one of the busiest in Scotland. To help with traffic, it was changed in 1997 into a grade-separated interchange. This means some roads go over or under others, making traffic flow better. It became Junction 1 of the M9 motorway. The A8 road goes from the Newbridge Roundabout right into Edinburgh City Centre. The A89 road connects Newbridge to Broxburn.
